Knirby AU Lore Bible

What's This?

An expanded look at my canon-based time-skip AU, Knirby AU.

Still very rough, I haven't been revisiting it as much as I'd like to.

Cast...

Primary Cast:

Characters who are involved heavily in the plots of the entire AU and whose lives, emotions, etc are the main focus on the story.

KNIRBY

The young warrior of the stars who came on a spring breeze has grown into the kind-hearted hero of Dreamland: Sir... well he hasn't decided on a knight title yet, everyone still just knows him as Kirby! He spent his teens training with his mentor Meta Knight in order to hone his natural powers to a razor's edge, and he now boasts the title of strongest warrior in the galaxy. But his mentor could never temper his care-free and outgoing spirit, and he hasn't let any amount of fame or power get to his head. The young warrior is technically a knight of King Dedede's court but he is a guardian of all Popstar and beyond. Having spent so many years focused solely on his training, Kirby is now looking to reconnect with all his old friends he hasn't seen since he was young. In the end he's still just a kind, friendly young man who wishes for nothing but peaceful naps and picnics with friends.

After becoming a knight, Kirby begins to realize how much he's changed in the eyes of so many. It's surprisingly hard to make casual friends when you're the strongest warrior in the galaxy and protector of the cosmos. He's always had an issue of feeling slightly disconnected from his friends, because he always feels a pressure to be a perfect support more than seeking others for it. But his new role has exacerbated that. He feels somewhat lonely being so extroverted but in a seemingly unreachable position, and sometimes wishes things were simpler. But through gaining more mature and understanding relationships with friends new and old he'll find his way.

Kirby is the anchor character to a rotating cast of troubled and complex characters, he is a very kind and simple man on his own but still has his problems. One of those being that he is a bit too kind, and in his dedication to mercy and understanding can quickly find himself being taken advantage of. The people who he is most concentrated on helping are often selfish or destructive and he can lose himself in trying to help those who are questionable to redeem. Despite everything he is deathly loyal to his philosophy of forgiveness and in the end the positive change he makes in the lives of others comes back to save him at his worst. With Kirby and my writing in general, I want to highlight the importance of empathy and understanding, even for those who may not want or deserve it. Even at people's worst simple acts of kindness and humanity mean a lot.

KING DEDEDE & SIR META KNIGHT

CAPTAIN BANDANA DEE

...

GALACTA KNIGHT

The legendary Greatest Warrior in the Galaxy, eternally sealed within a crystal for fears of his immense power... Throughout time and space he is seen as the ultimate challenge for any upstart warrior, and Meta had decided to keep up the tradition with having him be Kirby's final assessment for becoming a knight. It was a brutal, hard-won victory for him, but even then Kirby's compassionate heart ached for the warrior so like him who was trapped forever for crimes committed so long ago. Using a technicality he wished to Nova for Galacta's permanent release much to Meta's horror. But the ancient warrior seemed pacified and flew off. A few years later the ancient warrior finds himself on Popstar hoping to bond with Kirby and Meta Knight. The two are rather excited (Kirby by the promise of a new friend, and Meta to know he isn't starting a new galactic crisis), but a language and cultural barrier quickly presents itself. Kirby takes it as his responsibility to introduce Galacta to his new home and time, and gets to know this great legend for who he truly is – for better or for worse...

Galacta starts off seeming rather cold and quiet but that is mainly due to some culture-shock and communication barriers. As he and Kirby bond, his boisterous and competitive side shows itself, Kirby endures some of his quirks and outbursts thinking it's the knight being innocent but eventually realizes the truth about his ancient friend. Galacta was and is a very narcissistic and envious person and figured that he could use Knirby's kindness to feed his ego for some time. When Knirby finally gets wise to this and knocks some sense into him he learns his lesson.

Galacta is a living fossil of one of the most mysterious ancient civilizations of the universe, and through various interactions more is learned about him and his world. Galacta's life and personality is as complicated as the history of his time, and his rocky relationship with the society and people he once loved paints most portraits of the past told through him. Dealing with his past leads him to befriend the historians among the cast like Magolor and Meta Knight, and he learns to accept his new life despite the shadows of time and death that hang over him.

MARX

One of Kirby's first childhood friends, and one of his most memorable foes. The stellar jester had only pretended to be Kirby's friend to manipulate him into fulfilling a selfish scheme of gaining ultimate power, but Kirby had really thought they were close and the betrayal hit him incredibly hard. It weighed on his mind for a long time, and only worsened with time and realization that Kirby had possibly killed him in the battle. But unbeknownst to Kirby, his old friend wasn't dead! Seemingly as out of the blue as their first encounter, a grown-up Marx showed up with his peppy smile and colorful contrasting costume to greet Kirby. They shared some quick recaps before it came up that Marx was traveling and needed a place to settle down, and it came up that he could possibly live in Dedede's castle as a court jester. It's an... unpopular idea with almost all except Kirby and Marx themselves but by the end of the day, Castle Dedede has a brand new jester.

Marx starts his career out rather innocent and playful, if not a liiittle bit sadistic in his jokes, but over time his personality becomes more and more sour. This wasn't his first job as a court jester, and the only reason he had come to Dreamland's doorstep is because every other employer had kicked him out after only a few months. As his cruelty and passive aggression become more bare almost everyone else in the castle gets tired of him, except Kirby who keeps defending him. Not that he isn't blind to his antics, well... he is a little love-struck, but he genuinely believes Marx is a wonderful person deep down.

Although Kirby's faith in Marx can definitely feel like a mistake at times, he wasn't wrong at all to try and get to know Marx past both his coquettish facade and the nasty, immature bitterness coating his core. This pattern of Marx endearing himself to people before showing his true colors and being rejected has been a constant throughout his life - even as a child before Milky Way Wishes - and it's shaped him into the mess he is today. It's a vicious cycle for him of self-hatred and self-sabotage, but what makes his re-encounter with Kirby different is his patience and understanding. After the many ups and down that come with healing from the person Marx starts out as, he becomes an imperfect but playful, salty, and loyal friend to a select few others, and for Kirby - a lover.

Plot...

Arc 1 (DL1 - KSS)

After defeating Galacta and becoming a knight Kirby’s new status is celebrated by his family and close friends (which is where we establish all of who he considers such basically the entire courts of Dedede and Meta Knight.) After a few more logistics he’s finally free from his training and is given some vacation time between now and when he will start some formal knight duties.

He decides now is the time to find everyone he can on Popstar and catch up and update them on the news. He visits some big shots like Whispy, Kracko, and Lololo and Lalala, as well has some old friends such as the animal friends as well as some others such as the helpers from Super Star.

His last stop around Popstar and Dreamland is to go to the fountain of dreams to talk to the star rod, whom he shares a special bond with. He soaks in how much things have changed since he last felt so free to roam around his home and vents to the star rod about how feels a tad lonely even if he is ultimately grateful for all the people he knows and how kind they all are. But he comes away pretty assured that things’ll work out.

Arc 2 (KSS - K64)

As Kirby begins formal knight duties and once again finds himself feeling a lil down and out about how his status impacts how he interacts with others. Bandee and the Meta-Knights have shenanigans training him in what being a knight in the eternally peaceful Dreamland means and he’s caught up on some other diplomatic matters.

One day in the middle of whatever silly knight sessions he has Marx makes an appearance in Dreamland. Kirby’s ecstatic to see an old friend who he didn't know was safe and alive all these years, and even better it seems that Marx hasn't changed a bit from when they were kids. He insists that Marx be hired as a court jester since he doesn't have anywhere else to live, and he’s hired much to his delight and everyone else’ dismay. Some Marxian shenanigans go about as Kirby starts neglecting some of his more boring duties to spend time with his old friend. The questionable quality of his character becomes more and more apparent to everyone else and less to Kirby as he starts to fall for him a bit, and sparks tons of minor drama and silliness.

Gooey makes a surprise visit to Dreamland after hearing from old friends about the news of his knightship. Once again Kirby is happy to meet up with an old friend who hasn't changed much since they were younger. But then incidentally he gets a letter from Ripple Star from Queen Ribbon who is about the exact opposite end of his relationship with Marx and Gooey. The invitation is for the coronation of a new princess of the fairies and Kirby understands this means that Ribbon is nearing the end of her life. He decides to bring Gooey with him seeing as it might be interesting for them to meet given their history with Dark Matter.

Ribbon seemed to have become a much more mature and responsible adult faster than Kirby which he always envied her for, but as she's about to pick an apprentice he realizes that she's still the same girl he met all those years ago and not as cold and perfect as he thought. As well as tying up some loose ends about dark matter Kirby gets to find some resolution seeing where all his oldest childhood friends are now and how he doesn't really need to worry about losing himself as he grows into a position of authority. There's also a silly B-plot about Marx being left on Dreamland and annoying people, and also hints that Galacta is still around.
