Kirby Timeline

What's This?

This is a guide to how I organize the Kirby series time-wise, as well as in-depth into histories and character backstories that relate to the plot (and sometimes kinda don't). For the pre-game stuff, I'd recommend reading through the General Kirby Lore section first for context on the super headcanon heavy stuff.

The canon of Kirby is clearly a multiverse fiasco, but for the most part my chronology puts everything generally in the same dimension/universe. For example: Halcandra isn't in an other dimension , but is at the end of the Inter-dimensional Wormhole that is used to cross incredibly vast stretches of space (that is called Another Dimension). A lot of time shenanigans are cut back here too, it's just not the type of thing I wanna spend my braincells on, until canon gives me a really good thematic reason for why we need a multiverse lol.

My character and game biases will show through very strongly in the length and detail of some sections compared to others, but I've tried to put as much of this series together as I can.

Game Timeline...

My timeline is based around the real-world release dates of Kirby games. I treat the series as if it happens (relatively) in real time, with the gaps between releases acting as the gaps between adventures. I think it's elegant as well as kind of silly.

As well, this timeline follows main series releases and counts remakes and any new content within them as being part of the original release's adventure.

See EXTENDED GAME TIMELINE for alternative view of stuff!

Classic Kirby

Kirby first landed on Popstar in the spring of 1992, and quickly found himself taken in by a village of Waddle Dees in northern Dreamland. He and his adopted community lived in perfect peace until one day a newly proclaimed "king" of Dreamland began sending servants to demand taxes by force. Kirby acting to protect his home grew into his first quest as the hero of Dreamland.

After becoming a local treasure, Kirby would go on to defend the country from the likes of Nightmare, Dark Matter, and more of King Dedede's petty shenanigans. Eventually this role would grow into that of a planetary protector following his confrontation with Marx.

KIRBY'S DREAM LAND, 1992

Kirby had been enjoying another idyllic day in his home village in northern Dreamland when he suddenly heard commotion outside. Another gang of Wadde Dees claiming to be acting in the authority of some king threatened to take all their food, claiming that if they didn't give it up they'd never have any again due to the king's hold on the Sparkling Stars - the sacred trinkets which gave the land its bounty. Not wanting to see his friends bullied anymore than he liked the idea of no more food, Kirby chased them off and set out on a quest to regain the Sparkling Stars and put this self-proclaimed king in his place.

Kirby followed the king's subjects to the forests outside his village where he encountered Whispy Woods, the guardian of the area and local nature deity. A Sparking Star had been hidden among his leaves and like any treasure of his forest, the tree wouldn't give it up without a fight, but would fairly relinquish it once Kirby had knocked some sense into him.

Once clearing the woods Kirby could see his next target of Castle Lololo sitting near the edge of the northern Dreamlandic lake. Though still furnished like a haunted house full of traps and ghouls, it was recently under new management by a newly wed couple, Lololo and Lalala. They weren't the former dark lord of the castle, but they had still promised their neighbor, King Dedede, they would protect one of the Sparkling Stars. After the strategy of crushing their intruder with boxes failed, the couple was forced to hand over the 2nd Star.

Past the shore which the Castle Lololo overlooked, Kirby could see the mountain atop which the king's castle sat. Kirby began crossing the islands that led into the heart of the lake but eventually had to take flight into the sky where he was confronted by the blimp, Kabula. Despite its weaponry, Kirby was able to bring it to a smoldering heep with the power of the Sparkling Stars strengthening his air pellets, and thus the 3rd one fell from its hull.

After landing Kirby found himself among the skies of Bubbly Clouds, a portion of the Land of the Sky that Dedede had laid claim over. Within one of the regions majestic temples the penultimate Sparking Star lay, guarded by the sky deity, Kracko, whom like Whispy did't care for its treasures being tampered with. But Kirby soon scattered his cloud to the winds and finally descended upon Castle Dedede.

The king had known of Kirby's quest since the last of his tax-collecting dees returned with bruises and empty hands. But he was determined to have his dominance and food, and decided he would face Kirby head on as an event for all his subjects. Reaching the glorified mead hall of King Dedede's domain, the two squared off in a boxing ring arena designed specifically for them. Dedede threw his weight around and swung his hammer with all his might, but was still bested by Kirby, who with the power of all the Sparkling Stars in a single room, knocked him clear out of the castle and over the horizon.

With the Sparkling Stars all together again, Kirby was given the power to lift the Castle from its roots and return the food to the its inhabitants. All that was left atop the mountain was the arena and the king's startled lackeys.

KIRBY'S ADVENTURE, 1993

It had been nearly a year since Kirby became the local hero of Dreamland and had settled even more into his home. But the peace had been slowly eaten away at by a lack of dreams for the the country's residents, a completely unheard of occurance for them. Kirby tasked himself with coming to the bottom of this conundrum and flew to the northern most tip of Popstar where the Fountain of Dreams lay. The first thing Kirby saw once he landed there was the greedy King Dedede swimming in the sacred spring's water as if it were his personal bath, and the Star Rod missing. Before he could properly confront the King, Dedede knocked Kirby straight over the horizon back to Dreamland as Kirby had done to him about a year ago.

Although Kirby hadn't gotten the details of what King Dedede had done, he didn't need them to understand that he had likely left the pieces of the artifact with usual suspects. So Kirby made his way back to Whispy Woods and found that he was once again guarding a treasure the king had left with him. But upon defeat the tree was far more willing to give it - and Dedede's plans - to Kirby. Explaining that King Dedede had split up the Star Rod and left its pieces with guardians across the surrounding northwest of Dreamland.

So, Kirby set out on his inter-continental quest. With each boss he fought seeming even less happy to carry the Star Piece than the last, seeing as none of them were getting any sleep because of Dedede's scheme either. The rollerskating artist of Ice Cream Islands had only agreed to hold the piece in exchange for peace and quiet, and was happy to relinquesh it once Kirby came to ruin their painting sessions. The celestial stewards of of Butter Building had far more important matters to attend to than fighting (and bitterly losing) to children, and quickly forfeit their piece as well. In Grape Gardens, Kracko, the sky deity showed some enthusiasm to try andvenge its prior defeat, but once again was forced to surrender to the star child's might. The autonmous Heavy Mole of Yogurt Yard was as unimpressed with Kirby as his previous opponents, and would rather have continued its digging operations than defend a sacred artifact that didn't effect its mechanical brain.

It was when fighting Meta Knight of Orange Ocean that things seemed to shift. Unlike past bosses who simply jumped at Kirby the second he disrupted them, Meta Knight sat patiently waiting for him to arm himself. Kirby had also encountered him as an aid and challenger the whole adventure, and though he could feel that the knight saw him as more than just a random nuisance, he was very ready for this encounter for the sake of Dreamland. What he hadn't prepared for was to see that Meta Knight's face under his imposing mask looked just like his but dyed blue. The knight fled before he could question him further, and gracefully left behind the Star Rod piece Kirby had duly earned.

Galacta Knight and the Ancient Golden Age

The Ancients of Halcandra's legacy lives on primarily through the wealth of futuristic treasures that the once great empire had scattered across the galaxy. Few of their literary works are known, but unbeknownst to many, it's one of theirs that is the most enduring across time and space: The legend of the Greatest Warrior in the Galaxy - Galacta Knight.

It was once the legend of a noble knight and hero turned crazed with power, but even those details of the story have been eroded over time, only leaving behind the title. His name and title have changed little over the ages and passing down of the legend, because the very root of the words for "galaxy" and "knight" in most languages originates from the Ancients.

But what is lost is how the very reason why that is so relies heavily on this legend and his long forgotten exploits. Galacta Knight was an incredibly central figure to the formation of the Ancients into the power it is remembered as today, but that is largely forgotten to even those most versed in it's history. The legend of Galacta Knight has always been a tragedy to some extent - tragedy of greed, of corruption, or of deceit - but time has turned it into a tragedy of the transience of history as well.

ORIGINS OF GALACTA KNIGHT

Galacta Knight lived much like Kirby in his youth, falling to the countryside of Ancient Halcandra and being adopted into a small village of waddle dees. He became a local folk hero in his adventures protecting his peers, but Halcandra, despite its bounty, was not as carefree and lackadaisy a planet as Popstar. The people of his village lived under the pressure of taxation under a halcat monarchy, and often didn't have time to take care of him to the fullest extent, leading him to live on the outskirts of the town. To the people of his village the crown was an acceptable evil, so what they went to Galacta for was help with local monsters. And eager to please and be accepted, Galacta obliged.

Monster hunting was a prodigeous career to the people of Halcandra, and soon earned Galacta all the attention, praise, and food he craved as a heart voidspawn. It earned him a very few friends as well, but the attention his peers wanted to pay him brushed up against the egotistical personality he began to develop as part of his heroic persona. This ego made him seek more and more than just a folk hero career, and he began seeking larger and larger game. It was when a ferocious red dragon began terrorizing the countryside that he really got his big break. In his interest in the beast he brushed up against royal monster hunters, who despite their teasing of him, filled him with dreams of becoming a knight. The greatest knight not just of his village, or of Halcandra, but of a young galactic empire he now learned he was at the heart of.

As well as the potential to become such a legend, Galacta's run in with those royal hunters taught him that the cards were greatly stacked against him as a lowly dee (as he claimed to be to others), and he began taking great pride in his origins afterwards. It was in one of his closest village friends, Myrian, that he confided this dream of rising to the top of Halcandra and becoming the greatest in the galaxy, a great galactic knight - which would become the basis of his following title that he is remembered by aeons later. It was by no means his first name, as he was gifted many nicknames - affectionate and not - by his peers in his early life. But even within his lifetime his identity as a knight would eclipse those.

Emboldened by his new dreams, Galacta would go on to single-handedly slay the great red dragon, a feat that would gain him more than just the villages attention. It brought on him the eye of local nobles and warriors alike, but as well the responsiblity of a litter of 4 dragon pups. The dragon had turned out to be a fearsome mother and not just a mindless beast, and due to pressure from his friends, he ended up raising its pups. As he would begin his campaign of self-training for the chance at military prestige, he and a few others did their best to care for the orphaned dragons. The experience helped him stay grounded in his roots while he aspired for greater things, and even earned him a few more friends who got to see his sensitive side. It was helpful for the dragon pups as well, the experience of being handled by people in their formative years would make them docile and wise of civilization. A peculiarity that would keep them out of the way of hunters, and alive and together for longer than anyone then could imagine.

EARLY SERVICE UNDER KING IVAN

The self-discipline, training, and campaigning that Galacta practiced did not pay off immedietly upon reaching Halcandra's capital, as he found himself beginning his military career in the lowest ranks of the army system. More surprisingly to him however, he found himself with many of the boys from his village, whom now admitted that they were greatly inspired by him. Despite the fact he wasn't on good terms with most of them before, he found himself growing incredibly close to them as they navigated their new urban life. The city was far different from their countryside home, and was filled with the great marvels the Ancients are known for, giving them all a chance to become far more cultured. It also gave Galacta a chance to grow into a more charismatic and social person as his ego even more.

However this personal renaissance for Galacta would be short-lived as the realities of his new career set in. Halcandra was no stranger to war during this time, and Galacta soon found himself in one, as a lowly infrantryman alongside his peers. The chance to finally show off his might and excellence in combat was welcome, but it was soured instantly as Galacta began to lose friends in conflicts outside of his control. It was incredibly crushing and frustrating for him to lose all those whom he'd just began to truly open up with, and when he was supposed to be the savior and greatest in the galaxy. He threw himself even more into combat to try and avenge his companions, but it was very little use as he realized how powerless he was in his rank. It filled him with an even deeper and darker resolve to climb the ranks beyond just his own glory.

As Galacta learned to better scrutinize the powers commanding him, he was ultimately led to the machinations of the current king of the star and burgeoning galactic empire, King Ivan. This king was no more corrupt or self-centered than any previous monarchs, but what he was was ambitious to spread Halcandra's power. The star already had control of a few small surrounding bodies, but he began a campaign of true conquest against the their neighbors. Lauching Halcandra into an era of expansionist wars, to which Galacta primarily suffered in. And as he did, showing off the fullest extent of his might, courage, and strategy on the battlefield, he could never become a knight. He reached the highest office possible and on multiple occassions showed that he was qualified for the position, but it was an impossiblity under the king's rule.

Though Galacta rightfully begrudged Ivan for his bloodstained policies and classism, he came to at least respect that the fact he held such high office was a bit of a blessing. In what wisdom king Ivan had, he knew that a diverse, merit-based military was a good one, and understood Galacta's strengths. But he had his boundaries, and as the title of knight had been considered a noble and sacred one for milennia, no merit could earn a waddle dee the title in his eyes. However, King Ivan's son and successor, King Peter, would liberally build on his legacy.

PROMOTION UNDER KING PETER

King Peter met Galacta Knight as a prince and knight during the largest scale war the growing empire would ever face. The young Peter was amazed by Galacta's strength and intelligence (which Galacta had not a single qualm flaunting), and even more so by the fact he was placed in charge of him despite the disparity in their skill. Galacta by this time had amassed very strong opinions on the structure of Halcandra's military, and quickly radicalized the young prince into understanding the need for change. The two formed a strong bond beyond just the political as they worked together in the war for many years. And Peter swore that once he was made king he would promote Galacta to the role of commander-in-chief.

After the war a freak tragedy prevented Galacta from returning home for many years as he was lost in the cosmos. During this he became more worldly and absorbed even more diverse ideas from across the unconquered depths of his galaxy, as well as gaining more empathy and perspective. By the time he did eventually return home he was overflowing with new ideas on how to modernize the Halcandran army, and luckily he did not have to wait long as King Ivan had died not long before he had returned. His miraculous return only bolstered Peter's enthusiasm to celebrate his heroics, and one of his first acts as king was the promotion of Galacta to knighthood as well as the newly formed position of General of the Halcandran Imperial Army.

HALCANDRAN GOLDEN AGE

Under Galacta Knight's command is where the Halcandran Empire that is revered in inter-galactic histories and legends came to be. He turned it into a true empire, but not through the brute force strategies pioneered by King Ivan, he adopted a policy of peace rather than conquest. Technological and social envies of the galaxy had been what made the star such a force to be reckoned with in battle, but as he learned in his travels, it made them attractive rulers as well. With the largest threat to their sovereignty felled in the previous war, it was not hard to spread Halcandra's reach throughout the rest of the galaxy primarily through diplomacy and negotiation. The army was still deployed numerous times, but always with careful consideration and - as Galacta Knight had gained during his years - a merciful hand for all ranks of soldier, making him a beloved military leader.

This steer away from militarism combined with the spoils of expansion allowed Halcandra to spread its industrious wings into reaches beyond just weapons, factories, and fortresses. It developed numerous monumental inventions such as the Starcutter, Nova, and Star Rod during this age. The Star Rod and Galactic Nova were more re-invigorations of older technologies. The prototype of the Nova had primarily been a record keeping idol before it was revamped with Dream Magic and given the ability to fly. And the Star Rod had existed in a rudimentary form before, but was innovated in effectiveness and reproducibility in order to be stationed on stars throughout the empire, as a way to claim them as well as give them benefits for their loyalty.

The culture and social structure of the star and empire evolved as well. As general, Galacta quickly moved to modernize the military structure, emphasizing meritocracy and liberalism within. He began training personal prodigies, one of which being a waddle dee named Natasha, who became the first female officer in the star's recorded history. She and many other knights were placed into new positions that made up a far more diversified chain of command. And understanding the importance of respecting their new provinces in order to keep them loyal, Galacta and Peter mapped out many new terms and structures of governance to encompass their diverse new empire. Along with the remnants of inventions that survived to modern day, the structure of the Halcandran army and Empire was one of their many innovations that would be looked back on for aeons. Surviving through chains of copycat empires rather than formal records.

Although not a primary interest of his, court culture was undoubtably revitalized by Galacta Knight as well as his wife Myrian, whom he'd married between Ivan's wars, and now greatly enjoyed the full extent of his time with. She and Galacta has always gladly (and controversially) flaunted their lower class origins and taste whenever appearing in court, but as high ranking nobles their influence became more pronounced. The prevailing aesthetic of the nobility for millenia had been that of sleek, cool futuristic decor and dress - purposefully the very opposite of the warm naturalistic colors and patterns found in the aesthetics of the lower classes and other galactic cultures. Galacta and Myrian forced the court to contend with these diverse designs, and they were slowly incorporated into that of the nobility. As well the tongues of Halcandra, which had previously been separated into a common and noble variants, began to blend as the couple and their lower class peers entered more conversations.

Together the two championed equality and social mobility for waddle dees and other lower classed species. They did not hire or promote a single artisan or adviser who wasn't outside the nobility's circles. While Galacta focused on royal political affairs, Myrian spent most of her energy investing back into their home village, which the couple now technically owned after it was gifted to Galacta for his service. But they invested in it rather than tax, and it slowly became a small hub of culture for waddle dees and lower-classed people from across the star and empire. One that beyond their lifetimes would grow to rival the royal capital itself in socio-economic prestige.

The investments in his home village helped Galacta Knight stay grounded as the work and stresses of his new title consumed him. He took on another trainee, and more military and political responsibilities as time went on, but never lost track of why he had so hard fought for this position. For the glory, and for the oppurtunity to uplift and protect his kin.

SEALING OF VOID TERMINA

RETURN TO DUTY

The quest to seal Void Termina had worked to revitalize Galacta Knight personally and occupationally. He returned a hero, praised unanimously as he hadn't been in centuries, but the gap left by his old friends and wife were not lost on him, and he was still in rather deep depression. Not wanting to see his general and friend continuing to wallow, King Peter made a decision that would in his eyes, crush two political birds with one stone.

King Peter had born two daughters and no male heirs, and he wasn't keen on his bloodline losing its autonomy due to marriage. For his eldest daughter, Yennifer, he had mapped out a plan for her to succeed him without marriage, allowing her to be the sole sovereign of the empire, before marriage became a question. But he was unsure what to do for his youngest daughter, Catherine. She was more demure than her sister, but he still wanted her path away from the throne to prevent potential power squabbles with them both being independent. Marriage was unwanted because Peter feared them being tied to someone who would use it to weasel their way to the throne, but if he could betroth her to someone trustworthy, he could let her live a politically active life while protecting his eldest daughter's position.

And so, between his depressed general and his confused daughter, Peter made the decision to betroth the two under the guise of it being Galacta Knight's reward for his service in sealing Void Termina. To him the short term controversy of their cross-species marriage would be worth the security of his plans for his daughters. Neither of them were very pleased with the arrangement however. Galacta saw it as a very shallow and shamefully regressive attempt to get him to move on, and Catherine was mortified at the prospect of being under the dominion of a man despite her father's encouragement. Luckily their mutual displeasure meant they were able to be comfortably cold towards each other for years. Being somewhat more like roomates than newlyweds.

However the presence of someone in his home did slowly raise Galacta's spirits as he began resuming his duties. And Catherine found Galacta Knight to be an incredibly open and intelligent outlet to express her personal and political ambitions in. As Galacta Knight continued to lead Halcandra though the late years of it's golden age, he encouraged Catherine to join the legislative body and keep her eyes on the throne, as her sister was far less radical than her.

Zero's Rise to Power

Meta Knight Backstory

CREATION

Meta was not born like other Voidspawn. Though usually they are born through the random and anomalous whims of Astral Void, Meta was deliberately summoned. Similar in concept to the efforts of the Jamba, he was summoned through a ritual which collected strong amounts of Chaos magic together in order to force Astral Void to incarnate as a voidspawn. It was a lone Nightmare Wizard whom studied the writings of Astral Void far more keenly than the Jamba that brought Meta into the world. Not the Nightmare who terrorized Dreamland, but a peer in magical study of The Nightmare Wizard clan - detractors of the Chaos Magic Schools of Yore. Specifically those who sought to harness the destructive side of Dream Magic for power and greed, and this wizard sought Astral Void for similar reasons.

However as careful as the wizard was in his studies, he was still missing all the facts of the ritual. It took countless years of his life to bear any fruit, and the wizard grew old and bitter from waiting. But with no other hope for his ambitions than this, he continued on, until finally his prayers were answered, just not as he'd hoped.

The Nightmare Wizard had ambitions of ruling over entire galaxies with an obedient monster of Chaos under his control. He only understood the raw power of voidspawn, and had no clue of their natures. So when a nubby pale blue little creature with soft grey eyes finally materialized - not the cycloptic creatures of darkness that were his only reference for voidspawn - he wasn't impressed. The wizard was almost tempted to assume it was just some stray inter-dimensional beast that stumbled into its realm, but his attempts to destroy it proved that it must've been somewhat related to the power it sought. If he could wait through all those years of the summoning ritual, he could wait through training his new creation too.

CHILDHOOD

The Nightmare Wizard sought to turn Meta into this tool for destruction, and though he was obedient and submissive under his domineering master, the young voidspawn refused to develop the bloodlust he'd hoped for - Meta was heart matter, and instead displayed innate kindness and compassion at every turn. This frustrated the wizard to the point that he eventually gave up on trying to groom Meta into his perfect monster, and began neglecting him to pursue new courses of action. He kept Meta around still seeing use in a creature of such raw power, and to keep his conflicting nature in check, he physically and verbally abused Meta and told him he would still never be better than the monster he failed to be.

This treatment was effective in curbing any attempts to retaliate or escape by Meta. He grew to believe that there was nothing for him outside the world of his master's study, but it couldn't stop him from dreaming about it. The wizard was a collector of countless ancient artifacts and texts, which Meta engrossed himself in to keep himself occupied. Legends and fairytales of chivalry and gallant knights inspired him the most. He believed the lies of his master that he was the beasts and evils that were always slain in those stories, but deep within he dreamed being those heroes instead.

Meta found comfort in the world of books and the ideals of companionship, and valor within. It was a retreat from the harsh reality of life under his master, who took out frustrations at spoiled plans on him, and would routinely test his abilities to learn more about Chaos magic. He learned more about his abilities and species than most voidspawn ever got the privilege to learn, but it only worked to make him feel more isolated and like an abomination. But he would continue to dream.

THE GALAXIA

Among the collection of the Nightmare Wizard, the most prized treasure was the legendary master sword, Galaxia - created late in the Ancient's golden age as a sacred blade of judgment and justice. Unlike other artifacts that simply sat inanimate or idle for any marauding robbers to abuse them, the Galaxia had a consciousness within its blade to judge wielders, and a very strong-willed one at that. This will and awareness had prevented itself from being abused, but she could not protect her blade from being disturbed.

Using Dream Magic, the spirit within the blade was quieted by the Nightmare Wizard and she was brought to sit in his collection. It was impossible to wield her, as any who tried would be burned or smote to a crisp, but the blade made a prestigious trophy nevertheless. The spirit of the blade did not see, touch, or hear in a traditional sense without a wielder, but she always had a perception of the area around her and the passage of time. Under the wizard's spell the Galaxia fell into a dormant pseudo-sleep, just barely aware of her displacement in time and space.

Meta had always known of his master's relic collection, and would sometimes sneak to it to try and see if an artifact from his fables were real and preserved among them. The Galaxia, covered in a magic Shroud of Darkness that silenced its spirit, had always sat forefront in the horde, but only understanding it as a precious object, Meta never dared to disturb what was underneath. It wasn't until one day that he read a legend about the blade that he put together what must've sat underneath the dark cloths.

The young voidspawn was awed to realize he was in the presence of such a wonder of magic and nobility. A golden blade of light that could peer deep into the heart of anyone with the courage to grasp it, and judge them for their character and nothing else. He indulged himself with dreams of removing the Shroud of Darkness from the magnificent blade, and letting it judge him to be pure of heart and worthy of knighthood, but he told himself that those were fantasies and nothing more. Nevertheless, Meta could not help but be drawn to the blade more and more, and any time he felt it was safe he spent in its presence.

GALAXIA'S CHOSEN

As heart matter it was only natural for Meta to be drawn to the blade, he and it's spirit of justice were born from the same element. And as Meta was drawn to the blade, through the depths of its spirit, the blade grew drawn to him, slowly growing more and more conscious in the young boy's constant presence. One day, the spirit gained the strength to reach out to Meta, subconsciously urging him further and further to approach it, and his destiny.

It took time for the spirit of the blade to embolden Meta to uncover the blade, but once he did, it and its spirit were finally set free in a show of fire and light. Finally she could more clearly reach him, and tell him to summon the courage to grasp the blade of light. Awed by the legendary swords full glory, he obliged and became Galaxia's first chosen wielder. The heart magic of the weapon filled Meta with warmth, confidence, and determination like he never had before. The spirit of the blade took a physical form before him, one of a heart voidspawn that could be mistaken for his own mother, and she spoke to him of her gratitude for and pride in him.

Meta had been so overwhelmed by the blessing of the blade that he had left behind any previous caution, and was taken by surprise when his master found him wielding his most precious sacred treasure. Awash with fury and shock at Meta's disobedience, he swore to kill Meta where he stood, but Galaxia's chosen hero would no longer suffer under his tyranny. The power of the blade and spirit flowed through Meta, and in retaliation he killed his master.

BIRTH OF META KNIGHT

Meta would never have dreamed of harming his master before, and he still could not believe he had when he did. He always feared it would turn him into the same kind of monster he was, and at that moment holding the legendary blade of justice, he believed it would judge him so and kill him. But the blade did not, and the spirit within only expressed pride. She comforted Meta and told him that although his mercy was good, he did nothing wrong and would not become a monster for standing up to evil.

Still Meta fretted, he couldn't grasp his true worth after so many years of degradation. Even if he was her chosen, he could never be a white knight of justice, he couldn't see past his own shadowy appearance and background. So to comfort him she told him a story. The story of Galacta Knight, The Greatest Warrior in the Galaxy, who had been the very definition of a gallant white knight, yet still fell to corruption within his own heart because of his vain assurance in his purity. Meta had heard fragments of the tale before, but never understood the that side of the legend.

Inspired by her tale, Meta began to find a place for himself and his dreams of knighthood. He would be the opposite of such legends, he would embrace darkness in which he was born into so that he could be it's scourge. He would fashion himself off the elegance and coolness of night so that he could be the light within it. He would be the knight of knights - an ultimate ideal based on merit rather than aesthetic - and hence his title of Meta Knight was born.

Marx's Origins

THE PROMISING NODDY

Once upon a time, in the year ???, there was a young orphaned noddy named Marx who lived in Rainbow Resort. The noddies were a race of people native to Rainbow Resort who were especially gifted in arts of meditation and magic, but Marx was a peculiar one in that he lacked the mellow and meditative attitude of most, yet still excelled as a mage from a young age. Despite his talents, Marx's excitable and often disrespectful nature left him not well liked by his peers and adults who tried to train him in traditional arts, and he found himself without a proper home, being given up to one of the region's many magical schools.

One day, something incredibly momentous occurred for the typically insular noddies of Rainbow Resort: two incredibly powerful mages - the stewards of the star's celestial bodies, Mr. Shine and Mr. Bright - came to their land to find an heir to their earthly fortunes. After some rather embarrassing encounters with a certain pink puffball, the two were ready to retire from life on the surface of Popstar and dedicate their immortal lives mostly to their cosmic duties. They would choose a young noddy to train in their rare and elusive magic and once grown lord over their home in Nutty Noon in all its secrets and riches.

When the celestial mages were presented with the most promising young magicians of Rainbow Resort, Marx easily stood out among the rest as the strongest, and through his bubbly attitude, the brightest and most eager to learn. So, Mr. Shine and Mr. Bright chose him to be their protégé, much to the shock but also slight relief of his teachers who never had any idea what to do with the child's promise. A more typical noddy with their slow and methodical attitude may have been a safer investment for the future of their legacy, they were warned, but the mages were looking forwards to training a fast-learner and heading towards their retirement.

A PROMISING FUTURE

Marx was ecstatic at being chosen, life with Mr. Shine and Mr. Bright sounded like everything he'd ever wanted: new things to learn about magic, a place to call home away from people who didn't appreciate him, and a future as a powerful and important mage who could make his own rules.

At Nutty Noon, Marx had his own room instead of sleeping in dorms, special clothes were made for him rather than just wearing a uniform, and he had servants who waited only on him. When his lessons began, he found them far more fun than anything he'd learned at Rainbow Resort. Noddies taught in groups where everyone was expected to co-operate and work slowly, but Marx had found that incredibly boring and would goof off and make himself the center of attention to stand out more. It was almost impossible to get a rise out of the noddy teachers, but far easier with his new guardians.

In his free time during the day, Mr. Shine would attempt to instruct Marx through rigor, similar to the noddies, but Marx found it easy to annoy him by rushing into things, forcing the moon mage to speed up the lesson to correct him. During the night, Mr. Bright would make up lessons as they came to him, so Marx purposefully asked questions he knew he didn't have the answer to, and watched as the fiery sun mage lost his temper. Despite his trickery, Marx learned a lot from his new guardians, and was always hungry for more knowledge and magic, even as his tireless teachers grew weary of his boundless energy.

The mages had wanted someone who could learn quickly, but they hadn't accounted for their own lack of skills in instructing mortals, especially one as rambunctious as Marx. And on top of teaching their new protégé, they still had their subjects and diplomatic affairs to attend to. Marx would be brought along to learn about this side of his future, but he never seemed to listen. When he wanted to, he showed signs of being a charismatic lord-in-training, but it was lost beneath a growing penchant for pranks, enabled by the new magic tricks he learned and over-eagerly practiced on others.

BROKEN PROMISES

As time went on, Marx's lessons slowed to a crawl and he traveled with his guardians less and less, driving the restless child rather mad. To cure his increasingly volatile boredom, they did allow him to go outside under the supervision of a servant, whom Marx would quickly abandon to find other things to do and people to practice magical tricks on. Much to his amusement, he learned that the average person is even quicker to anger than Mr. Shine and Mr. Bright. But they were also more likely to try and hurt him back - a few close encounters with powerful ruffians taught him the importance of subtlety in his trickster endeavors.

One particular person he met was a young boy named Kirby. He seemed like nothing special on the surface, even a little boring with how hard it was to upset him, but when he brought him up with his guardians he learned that there was more to him than met the eye. A few months later Kirby even managed to tear apart the warship of some villain trying to take over a neighboring country, something Marx had front row seats to from his spire in Nutty Noon adjacent to the battle over Orange Ocean. Marx started spending a lot more time with Kirby after that, even if all he did was nap and stare at the sky, he liked being around someone who never fought with him for his teasing.

Despite this new companionship, Marx still found himself annoyed by how little time his oh-so-great magical teachers spent with him. But that all changed one day, while discussing his exploits with Kirby to his guardians. The subject caused the two to launch into a petty argument over what - or specifically who - had caused their losses against him. The mages, of course, blaming one another's magical faults. Marx had always understood how sensitive a subject their respective magical elements were to Mr. Shine and Mr. Bright, but that squabble gave him an idea of how to best use it to his advantage...

A NEW WISH

A few days later, when his now rare one-on-one training sessions with his teachers came around, Marx made sure to end each lesson with a big smile and a thank you to the celestial mage for teaching him such an important and special magical element. This flattery quickly got Marx what he wanted, as the mages quickly took more pride and interest in their lessons, but it also set them up for jealousy.

It was easy for Marx to goad one into bragging about their celestial body and its associated elemental strengths, then twist that into lies about superiority over the other. When discussing the subtle elegance of the Moon, Marx would tell Mr. Shine that Bright said his magic was weak and that the moon was superficial, unlike his life-giving sun. And as Mr. Bright spoke of the glory of the sun, Marx would mention that Shine thought his magic were completely unrefined and that the sun was just an ugly burning ball of fire, unlike the elegant and mystical moon. Marx would tell these lies with a sense of innocent honesty, creating so much jealousy between the mages that soon they were fighting over the chance to train him to prove themselves.

Everything was going smoothly with them again, until one day, Mr. Shine and Mr. Bright decided that arguing over who would get to train Marx was more important than actually training him. And after that, arguing over the superiority of their respective celestial bodies became a higher priority too, to the point of disregarding the time of day to have theirs in the sky. Soon, they were completely neglecting their duties to uphold the daily cycles of Popstar, but more importantly to Marx, they were neglecting him again. The noddy was at his wits end on how to regain their attention and his valuable magic lessons, and began studying on his own while ignoring the ever-fluctuating sky and his guardian's bickering.

But, while studying in the archives of Nutty Noon, Marx found an interesting story about a legendary clockwork star, called Galactic Nova, that could allegedly grant any wish. He'd heard bedtime stories about such a thing, but in these records were real instructions on how to summon and use it. Seeing this, Marx came up with a new scheme, one where he could completely bypass all the boring and useless work of learning magic from others and simply assume all the power he could ever want. And once he had that, why would he need to stop just at ruling Nutty Noon, he could rule the whole world and never have to follow anyone else's way ever again!

Despite everything he'd learned though, he wasn't sure he had the ability to follow the course needed to get his comet, so one last time he figured he was going to have to rely on trickery to get what he needed to be completely independent. And there was a certain pink someone - as gullible as he was strong - who Marx saw as the perfect candidate for this mission.

WISHES GRANTED

Marx's plan had been perfect all the way through. He'd easily convinced Kirby to fly into space with him on account of the cosmic chaos, and he'd been none-the-wiser over who had started that sun and moon's fighting, nor why Marx was so sure of a solution. Traveling star to star, Marx would play the same game he did with Mr. Shine and Mr. Bright, he'd praise and flatter Kirby with giddy abandon, and he soaked it up like a pink sponge.

But when it was finally time for them to meet Galactic Nova, Marx was so excited he forgot his original plans to ask politely to make the wish and just kicked Kirby out of the way. This was it, and he couldn't wait any longer to make his wish - to control all of Popstar!

The comet granted his wish in the form of an incredible surge of magic flowing through his body, nearly too much for the noddy to handle, but he was determined to use it to bend Popstar to his will. The rush of power combined with the priceless shock on Kirby's face was everything Marx could have asked for. But as he shot off into the stars to test his new powers, Marx had forgotten everything he'd learned about subtly and retaliation; Even the ever-patient Kirby wasn't going to let this betrayal stand.

Before he knew it the hero of Popstar was sending Marx and his nigh uncontrollable wealth of magical power careening directly into its source, leading to a catastrophic explosion that completely neutralized him.

WISHES LOST

Marx came to some time later with hazy memories, a sore body, and the sight and sounds of his guardian's furious reprimanding. In his mania he hadn't noticed the summoned comet almost crashing into the planet itself and being held back only by the power of the sun and moon, a dire situation the celestial mages were not at all happy to have been forced into by Marx's games. But the teamwork during the effort did help them realize one thing - that all their prior animosity towards each other had been completely orchestrated by Marx. And if there was one thing that insulted Mr. Shine and Mr. Bright more than disrespect towards their duties, it was being played for fools by meddlesome children.

As Marx physically and mentally recovered from the overwhelm of magic as well as the near-death experience, the mages hadn't any clue what to do with him after the incident. They considered sending him back to Rainbow Resort and exchanging him for another student, but Mr. Shine didn't want him spreading their teachings (and misfortunes), and Mr. Bright was utterly done with the idea of raising an heir.

So, it was decided that Marx would be kept in Butter Building, but he wouldn't be trained as a mage or heir anymore. He could possibly find a future in some worthy position within their domain, but the promise of magical lordship - as well as his guardian's companionship - was completely abandoned. Which Mr. Shine and Mr. Bright figured would be a fair punishment for the dangerously over-ambitious child.
